On this day in 1859, the famous writer Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle was born, who gave the world one of the most famous detectives, Sherlock Holmes.
Arthur Conan-Doyle claimed that he was inspired by Joseph Bell, a surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, to whom Doyle worked as an assistant. Bell had the ability to draw general conclusions based on the smallest observations, and was also famous for the ability to guess the character, occupation and past of a person through details.
Doyle’s first Sherlock Holmes story appeared in print in 1887. Subsequent stories continued to be published for forty years, until the author’s death.
Doyle wrote a total of 60 stories about Sherlock Holmes.
